A precautionary boil water notice in effect Tuesday afternoon is said to impact about 95,000 water connections in Hillsborough County.
Officials issued the advisory for much of south-central Hillsborough County following a decrease in water pressure — falling below 20 psi — earlier in the day. Although water service has been restored, people are advised to boil their water until the notice is lifted.
"Around 3 a.m., there was a power glitch at the plant, and the generators kicked on just like they were supposed to," Lisa Rhea, the Hillsborough County Water Resources Director, said. "Unfortunately, the pumps did not transfer over to generator power. So the pumps that keep the pressure going in the system did not respond as they were expected to the operator that was on site. We do staff the plant 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he responded and within five minutes, had all of the pumps up and running on a manual mode."
