Kyle Busch had the ambition of driving for a racer who was also a racer and now his wish is fulfilled.
Richard Childress chose Kyle Busch because he noticed that Busch had a twinkle in his eye that brought back memories of the late Dale Earnhardt.
Both parties put their differences from the past aside and worked together to reach an agreement on a multiyear contract that will have Busch driving the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing beginning with the 2019 racing season. This came at the conclusion of a lengthy exploration process during which Busch considered his options for 2023 and beyond.
After which Kyle Busch got an early start with his new Richard Childress Running team this weekend, racing an RCR-prepared car at Circuit of the Americas.
The car is an old Cup car that has been changed to compete in the World Racing League. It won't teach him much about what RCR has learned with the current NASCAR Cup Series car. But Busch was able to learn more about how RCR does business by co-driving with his Cup teammate Austin Dillon.
Busch said Thursday, before the NASCAR awards ceremony in Nashville, that they were just showing him the lay of the land on this trip.
Busch is one of two Cup playoff drivers who will race for new teams next year. He is the most famous of the two because his breakup with Joe Gibbs Racing after 15 years was one of the biggest stories in the sport.
Tyler Reddick, the driver he replaced, moves to 23XI Racing. He takes the place of Kurt Busch's brother, who missed the last four months of the 2022 season due to a concussion and is still not cleared to race.
Busch and Reddick have to do some work for the next season that they wouldn't have to do during the regular season.
Busch has been trying to figure out some of the things they do and how they do things in their culture. He has been trying to get some of their ideas and other things across.
"The term "offseason" is relative. It's busier this time of year getting everything in order, planning, coming up with ideas, and putting things out on the table so that when the season comes, it all seems to go smoothly and you know when things are going to happen."
Next season, Reddick's RCR team, led by crew chief Randall Burnett, will work with Busch. Before this Burnett worked with Busch at COTA.
Busch has also been to the RCR shop several times already.
