The United Nations notoriously hosts the most relevant discussions in the world, and this GFDD-led panel is no exception.
Planet Earth and its oceans have become a ticking time bomb, and it is because of distinguished researchers such as Hilary Lohmann that we can continue to take steps towards a wider understanding of the current situation, and draft humanity’s plan of action.
GFDD Fellow, Hilary Lohmann, addresses distinguished delegates and participants in this discussion that took place in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations. On this prestigious stage, Lohmann stands on solid ground. Unwavering in her findings, she gets across a solid view and clear points related to the impacts of climate change on small island developing states.
“These impacts already have and continue to contribute to social and political instability around the world. Climate change is a threat to the environment and it’s also a threat to human security, but it’s not a problem that is out of our control if we address it.”
She deems it crucial to bridge social, ecological, and economic aspects in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic response that fits the adaptive capacity of the Dominican Republic. Alongside her in the panel were two very esteemed speakers: Mr. Ruben Torres (Founder and President of Reef Check Dominican Republic), and Karen Kent (Senior Coastal Resources Manager at the URI Coastal Resources Center). They brought specific know-how to the panel, and guide us through good practices to address these issues.
