The Teaching Awards Trust was set up in 1998 by Lord David Puttnam, with the support of all the leading political parties, the teaching unions and the wider education community, as well as key industry and media partners, most notably the BBC who have supported our work from the very beginning. With a background in the film industry, and a passion for education, Lord Puttnam decided to create the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession – Awards that elevate and celebrate the status of teachers and their work. Since the creation of the Teaching Awards and the charity 25 years ago – we have also developed the Thank a Teacher Campaign and this has grown significantly in the last few years with National Thank a Teacher Day becoming a fixture in the annual calendar across the UK.
