Narcissus Island Pride is one of the most fragrant Tazetta daffodils, and definitely one of the best bulbs to purchase for a fragrant garden. Narcissus Island Pride was developed in England by Rosewarne E.H.S. and registered in 2001. It is a cross between Narcissus Avalanche (one of my absolute favourites for fragrance in the Narcissi world) and Narcissus Autumn Sol. The flowers are quite small, ivory-white with a yellow cup, clustered in an inflorescence bearing 8-12 flowers per stem. The fragrance of Narcissus Island Pride is very sweet, possibly even sweeter than Narcissus tazetta, and in addition I can detect also fruity notes, such as banana.
This is one of my favourite daffodils for fragrance, unfortunately not very common, I bought it from Scamp Daffodils, a specialist daffodil nursery in the UK.
As usual for daffodils, the bulbs need to be planted in autumn in well drained soil, and the plant thrives in full sun or at least partial shade. In summer the foliage dies down and bulbs can either be lifted and divided, or left in place keeping them as dry as possible.
