Two people - including a child - were killed and seven others injured as Sarajevo came under renewed bombardment Thursday.
The shelling came moments before European Union mediator Carl Bildt announced that he saw negotiations with Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic as central to breaking the stalemate in the Bosnian peace process.
The latest civilian victims of the siege of Sarajevo came in the western suburb of Alipasino Polje.
Remains of the projectile that caused the carnage lay next to the blood-spattered path where its victims fell.
A teenage boy was taken to hospital for minor injuries. This young girl was not so lucky.
Bosnian Serb army headquarters said a boy and a woman were killed and three injured in the Serb-held parts of Sarajevo from government shelling and sniper fire.
The attack came as the European Union's new negotiator Carl Bildt arrived in the city.
He stressed that peace can be achieved in Bosnia through political talks not guns.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think there must be a recognition on all sides that there's not going to be a military solution to this conflict, and at the end of the day everyone will have to sit down and sort out the political issues, and the sooner that is done the better it will be because to prolong the conflict one way or the other is only going to increase the human suffering. That is a burden, I think, on everyone as each day goes by."

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There is no way in which a long term can supply a city of this size across what is essentially a mountain track. That's why I think it's essential to seek ways, if there are any, of opening primarily a land corridor to Sarajevo. I think that would be a very significant step forward. Obviously the Igman route is not the safest route around, that's for certain."

Earlier, sporadic shelling on Sarajevo's suburbs has damaged buildings, left holes in the road and destroyed an apartment.
