STORYLINE:
Two members of the Palestinian militant group Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade were killed early on Tuesday in a gun battle with Israeli troops in the West Bank city of Nablus, their group said.
According to the group, Israeli troops entered the city under cover of darkness and an exchange of fire ensued.
One member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade was killed and another was shot dead after he went to the dead man's aid, the group said.
The Israeli army said their troops were in Nablus in the course of a routine operation, when they identified several gunmen, who opened fire.
Israeli army troops returned fire and two militants were killed, the army said.
The dead men's bodies were carried on stretchers through the streets of Nablus by flag-carrying protesters, some of whom fired gunshots into the air, as they were taken for funeral services.
Al Aqsa is a militant offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party.
