See here for an up-to-date list of all the car seats in the US that currently feature a European-style belt path: [ Ссылка ]
When installing an infant car seat without the base, there are 2 typical ways of doing so... the American belt path just uses the lap portion of the seat belt, whereas the European belt path uses not only the lap portion but also wraps the shoulder portion around the baby's car seat. In our experience, a car seat with an American belt path will yield a secure installation in about 1 in 5 cars, while a car seat with a European belt path will yield a secure installation in about 4.9 out of 5 cars. Wrapping the shoulder belt around the back of the car seat, as the European path does, has safety benefits beyond just giving a more secure installation - it also helps to keep the seat more upright during a crash which allows the shell of the seat to manage the crash energy as best as possible and transfer as little energy into the child's body as possible.
For those who wonder if it is safe to use the seat without the base - the answer is absolutely yes (so long as it is properly installed, obviously).
