Autonomy leads to higher productivity, less burnout, and greater levels of psychological wellbeing.
Mastery is the desire to get better and better at something that matters.
Purpose means people subjugate their desires to a cause larger than themselves.
Mr Pink has provided some striking examples to show the impact of autonomy on performance.
On Fedex days, the Australian company, Altassian allows employees to work on anything they want to do. Employees come up with cool hacks and code which they present to the rest of the company in an all-hands meeting. They are called Fedex days because the code has to be delivered overnight. Encouraged by this, the company has decided to give employees 20% time off like Google. It may be noted that it is during the 20% time off that Google employees developed Gmail, Orkut, Google news, etc.
