Skeletal muscle is one of the three significant muscle tissues in the human body. Each skeletal muscle consists of thousands of muscle fibers wrapped together by connective tissue sheaths. The individual bundles of muscle fibers in a skeletal muscle are known as fasciculi.
Human skeletal muscle is composed of a heterogenous collection of muscle fiber types. This range of muscle fiber types allows for the wide variety of capabilities that human muscles display. The three types of muscle fibres are slow oxidative (SO), fast oxidative (FO) and fast glycolytic (FG).
The main functions of skeletal muscle are to contract to produce movement, sustain body posture and position, maintain body temperature, store nutrients, and stabilize joints.
