On 28 July 2022, the UN General Assembly declared that access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a universal human right.
With 161 votes in favour, and eight abstentions, the near-unanimous act in the General Assembly followed a ground-breaking vote in the Human Rights Council on 8 October 2021 that established the same right.
