Elon Musk Announced Tesla 4680 Battery Gen III Coming! 27% MORE ENERGY DENSITY? Tesla has just unveiled a groundbreaking achievement with its 4680 Gen III battery after years of relentless development. This marks a significant milestone, promising a 27% increase in energy density, which could revolutionize the performance of upcoming Tesla models. What makes this new battery so advanced? How will it impact Tesla’s future vehicles? We’ll dive into all of this in today's video.
How Is Tesla Tackling the 4680 Battery Challenges?
Elon Musk Announced Tesla 4680 Battery Gen III Coming! 27% MORE ENERGY DENSITY? Tesla initially encountered significant challenges with the 4680 battery, particularly in scaling the dry electrode manufacturing process for the cathode. This process was designed to reduce production costs by up to 20% and enhance energy density, but it proved to be much more complex than anticipated. For instance, maintaining consistent quality at high production volumes was difficult, which led to lower yields and delayed the battery's mass production. Additionally, Tesla faced issues with the battery's structural integrity due to the volumetric expansion of silicon in the anode during charging. This expansion could reach up to 300%, causing cracks in the anode material and reducing the overall lifespan of the battery. These technical hurdles made it challenging for Tesla to achieve the promised 56% reduction in cost per kilowatt-hour and delayed the integration of the 4680 battery into vehicles like the Model Y and Cybertruck.
Elon Musk Announced Tesla 4680 Battery Gen III Coming! 27% MORE ENERGY DENSITY? Tesla has recently achieved notable progress in its battery technology, particularly with the 4680 cells. These developments mark a significant leap forward, as Tesla has not only managed to address the challenges of producing the 4680 batteries but has also set the stage for future enhancements. One of the key improvements is the weight reduction of the 4680 casing, which has been brought down from 70 grams in the first-generation cells to just 49 grams in the latest version. This reduction was achieved by optimizing the casing, making it thinner, and simplifying the internal structure through innovations like welding electrode tabs directly to the cell’s lid. The impact of this weight reduction is substantial—considering that the Cybertruck's battery pack contains 1,344 cells, this translates to a 28.2 kilograms (or 62.1 pounds) reduction in total battery pack weight. Rather than leaving that space unused, Tesla has filled it with additional battery material, leading to an approximate 10% increase in the overall energy density of the battery pack.
