증시 대담
Time now for an in-depth look at the market news this afternoon.
And for that, I'm joined on the line by Dr. Yang Jun-sok, Professor of Economics at The Catholic University of Korea.
Professor Yang, good afternoon.
Thanks for making time today.
Let's start on Wall Street, where stocks last Friday ended with a sharp rebound on expectations that the Fed might slow down the pace at which it's raising interest rates. Close to 2-and-a-half percent on the Dow, and close to that on the S&P and the Nasdaq. What's the story in the global markets as we start a new week?
Korean stocks started off really strong today, but tapered those gains by the end of the session. 2-and-a-half percent for Samsung Electronics. Gains of a similar size for battery-makers LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI. Financials were lower. Tell us about the domestic market.
The strong U.S. dollar continues to put pressure on currencies here in Asia. Some analysts are still saying the Korean won is likely to touch 15-hundred against the dollar before the year is out. And that, they say, makes it more likely that we could see a business contraction in industry. What do you make of the situation, Professor?
