NOTE: Stefan WITAS (1908-2006) - very popular prewar Polish singer as well as Operetta and vaudeville performer. Educated as operatic tenor in a private singing school of Italian singer Umberto Macnez in Warsaw, Witas won the “new voices” radio competition in 1933 and was contracted with Columbia Records for the series of recordings. He cut several popular arias as well as hits of the day and his contract was extended until 1935 when Columbia Records closed their plant in Poland. Stefan Witas started recording for Odeon and Syrena-Electro where he remained until 1938. He often performed on air and was featured in the opera theatre Buffo in Warsaw as well as appeared in the varietes. His last performance was the YMCA show, held on the 27th Aug 1939, three days before outbreak of the 2nd WW.
Stefan Witas recorded almost 200 sides and was very popular also after war, performing in film comedies, radio shows as well as Warsaw Operetta and comedy theatre Syrena. He retired in 1979.
