(18 Jan 2017) Three people were killed in a gun attack on the state prosecutors' office in the Mexican resort city of Cancun on Tuesday - just a day after a shooting at a music festival in a nearby town which left five people dead.
It was too early to say if the attacks were linked, but they were a marked intrusion of bloodshed into Mexico's main tourism zone, a region that had previously been spared much of the violence plaguing other parts of the country.
Mexican authorities said on Tuesday they were investigating whether extortion, street-level drug sales or a murder plot was the motive behind Monday's shooting in Playa del Carmen.
Residents said the gun attack on the Blue Parrot Nightclub, which also left 15 people injured, came amid a growing drug scene in the town.
