This is a sketch of the Orion Nebula in the constellation of Orion. This nebula can be found in the middle star of the sword of Orion. This is one of the most popular nebula in the night sky, and even people who aren't really into astronomy have most likely seen at least one image of this nebula. I know that the moment this nebula stars appearing in the winter skies it is one of the most popularly posted images. Being so bright it is easy to get pictures of even if you don't have autoguiding, or if you can only take short exposures. It was one of the first nebulae I had ever attempted to take pictures of when I first got into amateur astronomy.
This star forming region is roughly 1300 light years from earth, and around 24 light years in diameter. Many of the stars within this nebula are new young stars which is why they refer to this as a star forming region.
This sketch was done on December 28, 2019 at the eyepiece of my Celestron 8" SCT telescope with my Vixen Zoom 8-24mm eyepiece at 24mm. I also had a F6.3 focal reducer on my telescope which allowed me to view this at less magnification than I would have got without the reducer. I sketched this on printer paper, with a HB pencil for the stars, and a 6B pencil for the nebula. In hindsight I maybe should have used a 3B or something like that to better represent the brightness of the nebula. I then used a blending stump to blend out the nebula so it fades out more like it does when you're viewing through the eyepiece.
