Saint James the Great, also known as James the Greater, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of Saint John the Evangelist, another one of Jesus' apostles.
James was a fisherman by trade, working alongside his father and brother on the Sea of Galilee. He was among the first disciples called by Jesus to follow him and was chosen to be one of the twelve apostles. Along with Peter and John, James formed part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing some of the most pivotal moments of Jesus' ministry.
Saint James the Great is particularly known for his role as a missionary and evangelist after the death and resurrection of Jesus. He is believed to have traveled to various regions to spread the message of Christ, particularly in Spain, which led to his patronage of pilgrims and the identification with Santiago de Compostela, a famous pilgrimage site in Spain.
Tradition holds that Saint James the Great was the first apostle to be martyred for his faith. He was beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa I around AD 44 in Jerusalem. After his death, his disciples reportedly carried his body to Spain, where he was venerated and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.
He is the patron saint of pilgrims, laborers, and Spain.
His feast day is on July 25.
