Bharat Maru
Disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Pandit Nayan Ghosh
Bharat Maru’s journey with the tabla began with an innate passion for percussion. Growing up, he was mesmerized by the rhythmic art and its power to elevate musical performances. Despite his parents’ support, financial constraints meant formal lessons were out of reach. Undeterred, Bharat took it upon himself to learn from friends and family, seizing every opportunity to play at Navaratri celebrations and temples.
As he honed his skills, Bharat’s path crossed with some of his idols, including Ustad Alla Rakha, Pt. Ravi Shankar, and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia—moments that marked significant milestones in his musical journey.
In 1987, Bharat’s wife Ullasini (Joy), who shared his musical passion, introduced him to Sangeet Maha Bharti. This connection led to the invaluable opportunity to train under Pt. Nayan Ghosh. Bharat eagerly embraced this chance, beginning his formal training with Pt. Nayan Ghosh and his father Pt. Nikhil Ghosh at their residence in Khar, a place steeped in musical history and as the home of Ustad Amedjan Thirakhwa Sahib for 13 years.
After moving to America, Bharat dedicated his vacation time to travel back to India for intensive lessons with Pt. Nayan Ghosh. This commitment continued until family responsibilities and his pursuit of getting a degree in law and then later becoming a very successful hotelier took president and all his time. Yet, his passion for the tabla never waned. In 2022, after attending the Festival of Tabla, Bharat’s love for the instrument was reignited. He resumed formal training with Pt. Nayan Ghosh and his son, Ishaan Ghosh.
Over the past few years, Bharat has immersed himself in learning, practicing, and performing at every opportunity. His performance at the Festival of Tabla in 2023 was a turning point, reaffirming his dedication to the art. Today, Bharat embarks on a lifelong journey with one of India’s greatest tabla legends, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, forging a bond that transcends the traditional student-teacher relationship.
Special Mention
Bharat sends his utmost respect and thank you to Shree Shyam Kane who was Bharat’s very first teacher and finally Dr. Pavan who is in the audience today for his wonderful teachings that are available on YouTube and of which Bharat made full use of during the period when Bharat
was desperately looking for further guidance due to Nayan ji’s and Ishaan's busy schedule which didn’t allow them to give further guidance to Bharat.
Pratyush Goberdhan
Pratyush Goberdhan’s journey into Hindustani classical music began at home, under the nurturing guidance of his grandfather, the late Prof. Hari Shanker Adesh, and Pratyush’s mother, Smt. Surabhi Adesh, who excels in vocals and violin.
Currently, Pratyush is honing his skills on the sarangi with Sri Pankaj Mishra, a mentorship that has flourished over the past three years. He also continues his vocal training with Pt.
