Floppy Infant Syndrome, also known as Infant Botulism, is a condition that can affect children under the age of one when they are given honey. It is characterized by muscle weakness/paralysis and a "floppy" appearance in the affected infant. The main cause is the ingestion of Clostridium botulinum spores present in honey. These spores can multiply in the infant's digestive system, leading to the production of toxins that affect the nerves and muscles. It is important to avoid giving honey to infants under one year of age to prevent the risk of Floppy Infant Syndrome/Infant Botulism, which can even result in death.
Apart from honey, other common causes of Floppy Infant Syndrome include exposure to environmental sources of Clostridium botulinum spores, such as contaminated soil or dust, and the consumption of certain foods that can be contaminated with the bacteria, such as improperly canned or preserved foods. It is essential to practice good hygiene and food safety measures to minimize the risk of Floppy Infant Syndrome in infants.
Though, Honey is believed to be safe for children over 1 years of age.
