LNER operate some named services including Northern Lights and Highland Chieftain.
This video shows the current train fleet (February 2024) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
The majority of the LNER train fleet was replaced by new trains in 2019/2020 with the final older rolling stock now in the process of being repalced.
The current LNER rolling stock consists mainly of a fleet of Hitachi class 800 and class 801 Azuma trains. Both classes are in formations of 5 or 9 carriages with double 5 sets operating some services in 10 carriage formations. The class 800 are bi mode with electric and diesel power to operate extensions to unelectrified destinations/routes and the class 801 are electric only units operating on the core ECML electrified routes only. The interior of all Azuma (80X) are similar with 2+2 seating in standard in a mix of table and airline style seating and 2+1 in first class with every seat having a table with seating ranging from single, double and bays of 4. The lettering of carriages is A B C D E for 5 carriages and A B C G H J K L M for 9 carriages.
LNER still operate a limited number of Intercity 225 trains with class 91 locomotives, Mark 4 carriages and a Mark 4 Driving Van Trailer in 2+9 formations. These trains are planned to be replaced by the new CAF Civity 10 carriage tri-mode trains currently on order. Until 2019/2020 the Intercity 225 operated the majority of LNER services with the majority of these trains being replaced by the Azuma. The 225 were/are electric only.
Until 2019 LNER operated 2+9 High Speed Train (HST) Intercity 125 trains with class 43 locomotives and Mark 3 carriages. These were mainly repalced by the Bi Mode Azuma as these were the old diesel LNER trains. These were the first of the older LNER rolling stock to be replaced.
New rolling stock for LNER currently on order consists of 10 10 carriage CAF Civity tri-mode trains (diesel, electric, battery). These will allow the remaining Intercity 225 trains to be replaced and were first announced in late 2023. They will likely be entering service around 2027.
The train fleet information is correct as possible as of February 2024 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current London North Eastern Railway operation has been in operation since 2018.
