African and European stakeholders met in Brussels on 28 November 2013 to discuss issues central to sustainable agricultural development and their implications for the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) process. Discussions focused on land and water rights and management, participatory agricultural research, seeds from a legal and practical perspective, and family and women farming.

The ECDPM team caught up with some of the experts, starting with Bridget Mugambe from Southern and Eastern African Trade, Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI Uganda) to ask what are the practical implications for farmers of seed trade harmonisation laws in the COMESA regional economic market. Pedro Arcuri from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) gives a view from Brazil of the importance for public institutions to collect and store seeds as part of genetic preservation of plant material. Edith van Walsum from the Centre for Learning on Sustainable Agriculture (ILEIA) highlights the opportunities to put family and women farming at centre stage in 2014 in the African Union Year of Agriculture and Food Security and the UN Year of Family Farming. Lastly, Henk Hobbelink from Genetic Resources Action International (GRAIN) talks about reviewing progress under CAADP and some key questions for consideration in terms of allocating public resources for agricultural development.

The results of this roundtable will hopefully inform the 2014 review of the CAADP framework, currently underway under the leadership of the AU.
