Panellists and families of Tunisian political prisoners discussed the humanitarian and political situation of the country in a panel discussion in London
Tunisia has been engulfed in a deepening political crisis since July 2021, when President Kais Saied unilaterally suspended parliament and dissolved the government. He subsequently ruled by decree, before pushing through a new constitution that enshrined his one-man rule.
In recent months, Saied has embarked on what Amnesty International describes as a "politically motivated witch hunt", with authorities arresting dozens of political activists, judges and lawyers, including the former speaker of parliament, and leader of the Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi.
Speaking from London, panellists and families of jailed Tunisian opposition figures have renewed calls for the United Kingdom, European Union and United States to sanction Saied, citing the ongoing arrest and torture of "anyone deemed critical of his government".
The discussion drew on stories with family members and peers who have been imprisoned by Saied, and commented on the international community’s complicity in humanitarian and political injustices in Tunisia and the region
