Venice Begins Charging Entry Fee for Day-Trippers to Combat Overtourism
Venice will become the first country globally to start charging day-trippers an entry fee to visit the city. It has launched a pilot programme under which day-trippers to Venice, one of Italy’s most picturesque and historic cities, will need to pay a charge of 5 euros or $5.35. This will apply to tourists who visit the city between 8 am to 4 pm on 29 peak days during the trial phase until July 14. However, People with hotel reservations and visitors aged under 14 do not have to pay the entry fee but still need to register beforehand. Residents, students, and workers are also exempted. Protests have broken out in the lagoon city. Protesters say they want a reduction in the number of visitors but do not believe this is the right method.
