How do Frogs Breathe?
When a frog is submerged in water, frogs are able to breathe through their skin, which is made up of thin, vascularized tissue that is highly permeable to water. This allows respiratory gases to diffuse directly through the skin and into the blood vessels.
On land, a frog's skin is kept moist by mucus glands, which help the frog absorb dissolved oxygen from the air. In addition to skin respiration, a frog can also breathe through its nostrils and lungs as humans do.
However, unlike humans, frogs do not have ribs or a diaphragm to help them expand their chest to breathe. Instead, they lower the floor of their mouth to expand their throat and take in air through their nostrils. The air is then forced into the lungs by contracting the floor of the mouth.
To exhale, the frog moves the floor of the mouth down, drawing the air out of the lungs and into the mouth. The nostrils are then opened and the floor of the mouth is raised, pushing the air out through the nostrils. When a frog is at rest, it mostly relies on gas exchange in the lining of its mouth for respiration, only filling its poorly developed lungs occasionally.
Can Frogs Down?
Another common question is if frogs can drown. Because Frogs have lungs like humans, they can drown if their lungs fill with water. As we mentioned earlier, frogs can absorb oxygen through their skin however, this process requires that their skin remains moist.
If a frog's skin dries out, it will not be able to absorb oxygen through its skin. While underwater, frogs can use their skin for breathing if there is enough oxygen in the water. If the water does not contain enough oxygen, the frog may drown.
