For my first cello I choosed the VC5S from Yamaha.
It specifies that it come with the D'Addario Prelude strings.
I bought the cello and when I received it I founded the strings mounted on it was wrong.
I seemed to me the G string's tension was very low and the D string was very hight.
Yet it was the right string's colors.
To decrease a little bit the D string's tension, I decreased its diameter from 0.90mm to 0.84mm.
As I never see a cello before and to be sure I decided to build a bench for measuring the strings's tension.
Three sets of cello's strings are measured:
- Eagleton cello S
- D'Addario Prelude
- the strings from Yamaha
This video show how I measured the D string of the Eagleton set.
Here are the results, diameter and tension for eatch string:
Eagleton set:
- C string: 1.48mm 12.0kg
- G string: 1.10mm 13.8kg
- D string: 0.78mm 13.0kg
- A string: 0.48mm 12.5kg
D'Addario set:
- C string: 1.66mm 14.0kg (28.0lbs)
- G string: 1.16mm 14.0kg (29.0lbs)
- D string: 0.90mm 14.7kg (30.0lbs)
- A string: 0.70mm 17.2kg (36.5lbs)
Yamaha set:
- C string: 1.60mm 13.5kg
- G string: 0.90mm 09.3kg
- D string: 0.84mm 12.8kg
- A string: 0.70mm 17.0kg
NB: the D'Addario tensions are also shown in lbs (from D'Addario)
After measuring the tensions's strings it seems that the only G string was wrong.
It certainly comes from the low strong set of D'Addario Prelude (Yamaha mistake).
