there is another swiss mosque, that is in zurich and it is smaller, but the geneva mosque will be the country's leading muslim place of worship.
the opening ceremony was limited only to men and another ceremony will take place later this month for women. traditionally men and women worship separately in mosques.

commentary: located in the petit-saconnex district of geneva, the new mosque and the islamic centre nearby were ordered and paid for by saudi arabia. the architect responsible for the design was osman gurdogan, a muslim of turkish origin who now lives in the city. the building of the mosque was made necessary by the increasing numbers of muslim residents in the city. there are 3000 of them in geneva and in the french-speaking part of switzerland and three thousand others live the other side of the french border, close by. it took three years to build. the first stone was laid in november 1975 and the building was completed last month. up to now the muslim community in geneva had only an old building in the town centre to use for their worship.
