It’s time to finally launch the 2021 Phonogram Traveling “Open Reel” Tape Project! It is long overdue!!!


The four categories you can sign up for are:

1) NAB EQ / 7.5 ips
• 1/4 Track (7")

2) NAB EQ / 15 ips
• 1/2 Track (10.5")

________

3) IEC EQ / 7.5 ips
• 1/2 Track (10.5")

________

4) IEC EQ / 15 ips
• 1/2 Track (10.5")

RULES

• Each participant is to record three tracks of their choice (Please Note: Category 1 can now have up to four tracks)

• Origination format is up to you and I would prefer that it be analog sourced. For example: open reel, cassette tape and/or vinyl. Heck, if you have a particularly fantastic sounding 8-Track you want to share with us, knock yourself out! 🤣

• Tracks should not exceed 3 minutes on average, 4 minutes tops. An alternative? If you *have to have* that epic 6 minute song, you can use it BUT you will need to count it as TWO songs. Make sense? Remember the more reels I have to include, the heavier the shipping boxes and the greater the cost!

• Please be mindful of the inherent cost involved in shipping several reel tapes especially when shipping internationally before signing up for participation.

( Because of the higher cost of these reels I am requesting that you secure a tracking #, and when necessary, buy insurance in case of theft or loss )

• This financial burden is the sole responsibility of each participant. For this reason I have ordered SM468 tape in plastic reels rather than metal reels in order to cut down on shipping weight. I realize that purchasing insurance may be extremely cost-prohibitive with our international members so those of you abroad please use your prerogative. But at least for those of us participating within the USA & Canada, insurance and tracking is a requirement

• Each song entry must be written in the accompanying Log

• Extreme care must be taken to queue up the tapes to the end of the last song recorded in the log to avoid taping over someone else's music! 😳😢😩

• 1/2-track tapes shall be shipped TAILS OUT

• 1/4-track tapes do not require TAILS OUT since it's not necessary as there are two sides. However these 1/4 track plastic reels will be clearly marked SIDE 1 and SIDE 2

• Average time allowed to keep the tapes after taking delivery before passing them along to the next participant: 7 to 10 days (14 days MAX and only with my express approval). I realize sometimes life gets in the way. Still, please be mindful of what the expectation is and abide by it. We simply cannot afford for these tapes to get stuck in limbo for weeks or months on end. That is simply not acceptable

• At the end of the traveling project and as with prior editions of the Phonogram Traveling Tape Project, I will digitize all the tracks and create a SAMPLER that will become available to all whom participated for a nominal fee to help cover materials (plus shipping)
