Caen Hill Locks is an impressive flight of 29 locks. The locks were designed by engineer John Rennie as a solution to climbing the very steep hill in Devizes. The locks are situated on the final stretch of the 87-mile route of the Kennet & Avon Canal.
Rowde is recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 although there is evidence of a much earlier Roman settlement.
Villagers started out as farmers but by 1695 were employed as woollen weavers, working from home. The canal arrived in 1810, followed by the railways, bringing new employment opportunities.
