혼다-닛산, 합병 협의 시작
Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan announced on Monday that they have formally agreed to hold talks on a possible merger.
Such a deal would create the world's third-largest automobile group by vehicle sales following Toyota and Volkswagen.
The talks are also set to include Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi, which is already in alliance with Nissan.
Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said the potential merger would allow accomplishments that "neither company could achieve alone.”
Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe underlined the growing competition with the "rise of Chinese power and emerging forces," saying that they would like to "lead the world once again".
The two Japanese carmakers said that they aim to finish the talks by mid-2025, and if successful, would set up a holding company by August 2026.
