"It is the end of the world as we know it." No, I'm not talking about the start of another harrowing term. (Okay, maybe a little.) It is rather an apt description of humanity as we desperately continue to hunt for sustainable alternative energy sources in the face of unprecedented climate change.
Enter our speaker this week, Prof Steven Cowley. Prof Cowley and his team at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy are working on making fusion energy a reality. Having just worked on the Joint European Torus, a giant fusion energy donut capable of generating 16 MW of power, he's just getting started - he intends to break this record in 2017-2018. The road ahead however is of course not smooth-sailing. What outstanding problems stand in the way? Should he succeed, will fusion power be the key to a carbon-free future? Attend the talk to find out.
Professor Steven Cowley is the Chief Executive Officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a Professor of Physics at Imperial College London and Head of the EURATOM / CCFE Fusion Association. A renowned plasma physicist, he was responsible for leading the development of a multi-scale computational approach to computing turbulence in plasma that is vital to fusion energy research. Prof Cowley also serves on the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology.
