What you should know about Pepto Bismol:
The active ingredient in pepto bismol is bismuth subsalicylate. It is an antacid and antidiarrheal medicine. It works to slow down the flow of fluid and electrolytes in the intestine, decreases inflammation in the intestine, and may also work to kill the bacteria that cause diarrhea.
It is used to treat diarrhea, gas, heartburn, nausea, and upset stomach.
It is not recommended for those allergic to salicylates like aspirin. And it should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Pepto bismol is indicated for adults and children 12 years of age and older. It should NOT be given to children and teenagers recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
Side effects of pepto bismol include darkening of the tongue and dark stool. Please note that this video is about basic pepto bismol where the only active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate. Always talk to your doctor to make sure that medications are safe for you.
