In Part I of this two-part series, we introduce two staunch critics of modernity: Friedrich Nietzsche and Julius Evola. We explore, in particular, Nietzsche's analysis of the problem of modernity: "the death of God"--a world in which people are increasingly critical of (and even antagonistic to) the idea that there is a higher power, objective truth for all, or a God. We discuss Nietzsche's proposed solution to such a world--namely, the his idea of the Übermensch, and we anticipate Part II of the series, during which we'll explain Evola's ambivalent attitude toward Nietzsche, as well as his attempt to reconcile what he considers to be Nietzsche's radical materialism by pushing Nietzsche's thinking (and the idea of the Übermensch) beyond its own limits.
