We all have those nemesis seeds--the ones we've tried every year in the garden but somehow just CANNOT get to germinate in your seed starting setup! For these seeds (or any seeds, really!), we recommend trying this trick to get them to grow more quickly and easily! We do this seed starting method with many of our natives and cut flower seeds that may be more difficult to germinate. Benefits to this method include:
-faster overall germination with less risk of algae and fungus (especially slow-to-germinate seeds)
-less wasted space in seed trays with seeds with lower germination rates, such as old seeds that you aren't sure are viable anymore
-easier to control moisture levels for more even germination
-takes less space on heat mats
We use this for harder to start/germinate seeds like some of our natives, echinacea, cherry caramel phlox, and more! While we've never done it with the fairy dust seeds like lisianthus and poppies, we may give it a shot and see how it goes!
Have you tried this method before? Which seeds do you like to do it with?
