1: Who is being audited. Don't assume it is business or personal, look carefully to understand the scope of the audit.
2: Check who the revenue agent is. Are they from your city or is this a national investigation?
3: What is the time scope of the audit. While it is typically 3 years, it can go back as far as 8 if fraud is suspected.
4: Note what issues are being identified for audit. This is not a comprehensive list, nor are the agents constrained by these parameters. Still, this will give you an idea of what triggered your IRS audit.
5: Beware of the deadline. You must reply before the deadline.
