"Make small games." You've probably heard this advice a million times if you're starting out in game development. But let's be real—does it actually work for everyone? I don’t think so. When I started learning gamedev, I wanted to make epic, unforgettable games—not a tiny platformer I’d never even play myself. And now, after finishing my first commercial game and working on a ton of projects, I’ve realized: the real advice should be to make smart games, not just small ones.
In this video, I break down why “small games” might not always be the best approach, how it can kill your motivation, and why focusing on smart, creative, and scaled-down ideas that actually excite you is way more effective. Whether you dream of making a Pokémon-inspired game, a Civilization-like strategy masterpiece, or something else entirely, I’ll show you how to rethink your goals and create something unique without burning out.
