Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta have taken to the streets to protest against what they say are exorbitant charges and deplorable condition of the road leading to the institution.
It was gathered that the leadership of students in Ogun State has been at loggerheads over the ongoing protest by the students of the institution. The students reportedly blocked the gate, chanting solidarity songs to express their grievances.
The protest which has been on for two days had attracted the presence of security personnel as they were seen trying to enforce order at the school entrance. They carried placards with various inscriptions, including “Fix MAPOLY Road”, “Security personnel, we don’t have one,” “We Don’t want Acting Rector,” “We deserve substantive Rector,” among others.
While addressing journalists, the State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Damilola Simeon stated the students demanded the replacement of Mr Odedeji who is the Acting Rector of the institution.
Mr. Simeon gave the state government a forty-eight-hour ultimatum to appoint a substantive Rector after which he vowed the protest will take a new dimension.
He didn't specify what dimension it would take.
