Bangladesh soldiers patrolled the deserted streets of Dhaka as a curfew was enforced to quell deadly student-led protests against government job quotas. The unrest, which has resulted in at least 105 deaths and thousands of injuries, continues despite a ban on public gatherings. Internet and text message services have been suspended since Thursday, cutting off the country from the world.
Protests erupted over controversial job quotas, including 30% for families of independence fighters. Although Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government scrapped the quota system in 2018, it was reinstated by a court last month. The state appealed against the reinstatement, and the Supreme Court suspended it pending a hearing on August 7.
