Your grandma may have always said, "Don't forget your cod liver oil."
She was right!
"Cod liver oil is what I call one of the great forgotten foods," says Wellness and Nutrition Expert Peggy Hall. "Years ago, cod liver oil was used as a general health tonic to fortify against colds and illnesses."
And for good reason! Cod liver oil contains high levels of vitamins A and D and essential omega-3 fatty acids. Together, these nutrients help support healthy skin and hair, strong bones and teeth, pain-free, flexible joints; a healthy metabolism and better moods.
Cod liver oil also appears to reduce the risks associated with diabetes, heart disease and every type of cancer.
To reap these amazing benefits, Peggy recommends that her clients take a daily dose of cod liver oil with breakfast to help the body absorb the vitamins, minerals and nutrients from their first meal.
"Luckily, these days we don't need to take it by the spoonful," Peggy says. "Capsules work just fine. One a day does the trick!"
How is cod liver oil different than regular fish oil capsules?
Peggy explains that they are both good sources of essential fatty acids, but cod liver oil is higher in vitamins A and D than regular fish oil. That's because cod liver oil is made from the liver of the cod, where those vitamins are stored.
Caution: Avoid taking cod liver oil if you're pregnant or on blood thinners, as cod liver oil and all fish oils thin the blood. As always, check with your doctor before beginning any new supplements.
