(31 Dec 1965) The Big Blackout
They said it couldn't happen....but it does. The elaborate power grid supplying the Northeast United States and Canada fails. And 25 million people in an 80,000 square mile area are affected. In New York City the scene is particularly dramatic when all the bright lights of Manhattan go out. There are colossal traffic jams - nearly a million commuters are trapped in stalled subways - stranded people unable to get home sleep in hotel lobbies. But the citizens adapt to the situation somehow, and there will be many stories exchanged on "Where were you in the big blackout of 1965?"
