I prefer the highlights but I hear showing the struggles of travel is more relatable so here they are for my Everest Basecamp trek!

Main struggle: it was extremely cold at night. That’s right, it wasn’t the long treks, ascents, or even descents…the hardest part for me was being cold whenever we weren’t trekking.

I took everyone’s advice (thanks cold-weather people), and my own from doing Antarctica, Svalbard, and Kili Summit — the three coldest destinations I’ve ever experienced…and still was painfully cold most nights 🥶😂

In fact, despite the “sleep with one layer on inside your sleeping bag”-theory, I figured out how to be most warm by sleeping with all of my clothes on, plus my water bottle filled with hot water, and sometimes if we had electricity, the heated blanket!

Second struggle: ascents at high altitude. The diamox pills helped, but it was still hard, and at one point I wondered if I was running out of oxygen (the clip of my finger reading my O2 levels at 69%)

Third struggle: I’m a picky eater, and the menu is the same every day, which I quickly lost an appetite for, which is dangerous since you need to eat 30% more than normal to trek for so long. I ate mostly ramen and snacks…and pancakes drenched in honey….that part wasn’t a struggle.

Fourth half struggle: I got my full on period one hour into the 12 hour Basecamp day trek. Luckily someone had a tampon, but I haven’t used one in like 7 years (I use menstrual cup) so it wasn’t exactly comfortable, not to mention…cold…if you know what I mean.

That’s about it. The bathrooms were actually all pretty clean minus that one shower in the video that felt like I was in a horror movie (I’ll post highlight reel anyway of the teahouse). It was also way easier being on my period on EBC than Kili simply bc there were bathrooms!

Speaking of bathrooms, I’ve had a couple ppl who haven’t done this trek say things like “pack in and packet out 💩”, so let me clarify and emphasize: there ARE TOILETS throughout the EBC trek…it’s the summit that has the trash problem, and I would never do that trek!
