Stephen L. Sala: The number one reason that the public avoids` going to the dentist is fear and anxiety. Fortunately, here in our practice, we're able to provide IV sedation. What that is, is that enables us to provide you with medication that will keep you very comfortable and relaxed, and calm throughout the process.
Many patients afterward have no recollection of the procedure or the appointment itself. However, during the procedure, they're able to breathe on their own, respond to all of our commands, and are able to return home.
We offer sedation to our patients in this practice because of the population's fear of the dentist. It's the number one reason people avoid coming in and having the treatment that they desire. Being able to provide that service, patients can comfortably come in and know that they're going to have their treatment performed in a comfortable setting.
So, during the process of being sedated, the first step is to have an IV started and we're able to titrate the medication to the desired effect. Meaning, that we can give you as much or as little as it takes to get you to where you're comfortable. You'll be completely conscious and able to respond to our commands. However, you most likely will not have any recollection of the appointment.
So, at the end of the appointment, it is required that you have an escort to see you home. You will still have some of the residual effects of the medication that will linger for a few hours afterward. You may feel a little groggy or sleepy afterward. So, it's important that you don't drive or make any important decisions after having sedation performed.
