Typhoon Faxai, whilst small, is intensifying substantially as it passes the Ogasawara islands of Japan. Over the next 48 hours, it will pass the Izu Islands and then make landfall within 40 miles of Tokyo as a Category 3 - which would make Faxai the strongest landfall in that area since modern records.
The storm could also deliver over 200mm of rainfall in parts of eastern Japan, with tropical storm force winds from Fuji to Iwaki, and all points in between.
