WWL-TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin explains why a blocking high may protect the Gulf Coast from a tropical system that could form soon.
There are three tropical waves highlighted by the National Hurricane Center as of Monday afternoon. Two of the waves are way out in the Atlantic and will likely curve north before they get anywhere near us.
A third wave is in the eastern Caribbean Sea and has a medium chance of development in five days as it moves west across the sea.
If this wave does develop, it looks like it would stay far south of Louisiana. We're expecting an area of high pressure to build over the Southeast late this week. That would shield our area and send anything that develops into the southern Gulf and possibly into Mexico.
We'll keep watching this week, so check back for updates.
