In the real world the size and shape of a room defines how reverb sounds. In a mix setting, pre-delay is a tool mix engineers use to create the right articulation, space, and presence for vocals and instruments.

In this video, Al explains how pre-delay is used to maintain the right sense of forwardness and space for each instrument in a mix.
Pre-delay is literally a delay between source sound and the onset of reverb, it represents the gap between the initial dry signal and the first onset of reverberations.
To understand how pre delay works, it’s best to think about the physics of how sound works in a room.
A smaller room will give you a longer pre-delay, since the initial sound source is closer to the listener will hit your ears much faster than the reverberations in the room. (1:34)
A larger room will give you a much shorter pre-delay because the initial sound source is further away and will hit your ears around the same time as the reverberations in the room. (1:51)
These concepts apply in a mix situation too. A shorter pre-delay tends to push elements back in the mix while longer pre-delay pushes elements forwards. (2:12)
To pick the right delay time for your mix, think about the tempo of your track (3:03). Tracks that use a slow tempo should be timed to a sixteenth note, tracks that use a faster tempo can go up to an eight note.
