In this tutorial I'll show you how to sew a historically accurate Edwardian umbrella ruffle for an Edwardian silk petticoat.
My Edwardian petticoat has a hem stiffening & facing, a dust ruffle on the inside of the hem, and umbrella ruffles joined with flat felled seams so that all raw edges are enclosed between the two layers of fabric. The top of the Edwardian umbrella ruffle petticoat is a basic Edwardian 3-piece petticoat shaped with darts and a drawstring waist.
Suitable materials for Edwardian umbrella ruffle petticoats are:
- thin silk fabrics - like habotai, taffeta, moreen or satin
- natural fiber faux silk fabrics - like viscose or cellulose acetate taffeta - called "heatherbloom" or "nearsilk" in the 1900s
- mercerized cotton fabrics, like sateen
