Only the bullring in Seville is considered the oldest in Spain, making the one in Ronda the second oldest. Both Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles were regular attendees (Orson, is in fact, has his ashes buried here in Ronda - his favorite town of all the ones he has visited)
While I don't promote or condone bullfighting, I am fascinated by this part of the Spanish culture. We did not attend any bullfights and chose only to visit this one because of its historical significance in the history of this tradition.
This ring does hold a record, being the largest in the world for the rueda, which is the large round circle of sand in the center. The bull ring, which holds 5,000 spectators, was begun in 1779 and completion was in 1784, although a collapse of a section delayed the opening much longer.
Also very important is that Ronda was the home of the Rondeño style of bullfighting and also of the Real Maestranza De Caballería De Ronda. Apparently many purists scoff at the style used in Sevilla and other rings as being too "theatrical", etc.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the ring and to the Museo Taurino, which contained many historical artifacts and bullfighting regalia. While quite a few of the bullrings in Spain have been closing due to the outcry of people against this tradition, the ring in Ronda continues to host the event on occasion.
Here is the song used, from the You Tube audio library, with this required statement (I felt the song contained the somber tone needed to convey the mood and space, as well as bringing up the ghosts of the past) - You’re free to use this song in any of your videos, but you must include the following in your video description:

As usual, Ed does the wonderful camcorder filming and narration, while I do the still photography, selecting the music, editing and uploading everything to You Tube.
