In this video, we take a brief fly-over of the key facts re the Western Sydney International Airport project and explore it from a Quantity Surveyor’s perspective. Discover how a Quantity Surveyor contributes to the planning and financial management of such a large-scale project.
Located in Badgerys Creek, the airport is officially named Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, in honour of the pioneering aviator Nancy-Bird Walton. The construction is set to be completed in stages, with the first phase expected to open in 2026. The estimated cost of the project is around AUD 5.3 billion, and approximately 12 million cubic meters of earth will/has been be excavated.
A key driver of the Western Sydney City Deal involves a partnership between the Australian Government and the NSW Government to jointly fund and deliver the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport rail link. This rail connection, scheduled for completion by the airport's opening in 2026, giving a total project cost (airport + associated infrastructure) of around $11 billion.
The Australian Government’s contribution includes $60 million for the Western Sydney North South Rail Link and Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport joint business case, and $5.19 billion for the delivery of the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport. This funding also covers $61 million for constructing the Elizabeth Drive Overpass, crucial for metro rail access to the airport.
The project is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring energy-efficient designs and water conservation measures. It is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including thousands of jobs and a substantial boost to the local economy.
