Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson says the Coalition will do emissions reduction “better than Labor” because they will use a “reliable, proven technology”.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton says he will not quit the Paris Accord or give up on net zero.
It is understood Mr Dutton's recent dismissal of the 2030 climate target was due to the goal being unachievable.
“I don’t think it’s any better to lie to them [Pacific nations] to say to them we can achieve something that we actually can’t achieve,” Mr Paterson told Sky News Australia.
“Under the Coalition, we will do as much emissions reduction as we can without harming our economy adversely, and we’ll do it better than Labor will because we have a reliable, proven technology in emissions-free nuclear technology.
“We’re the only party putting forward a coherent plan for reaching net zero by 2050.”
