A couple of days ago, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had all but confirmed that the Election Act 2017 is set to be amended in order to empower the upcoming caretaker government to take important decisions rather than just run day-to-day operations until a democratically elected government takes over.
Today, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government proposed 54 amendments to Election Act 2017 to empower the caretaker government and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Under the amendments, the federal government has proposed granting the interim setup additional powers to take important decisions related to the country’s economy.
Moreover, the proposed legislation sought to empower the caretaker government to engage or sign agreements with international institutions.
Renowned political commentator and legal expert Muneeb Farooq analyses the situation, and whether amending the election law making the interim government controversial, in an already polarised political environment.
