Over 69,000 mpox cases and 1,200 deaths were reported across Africa in 2024, with the majority in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A highly infectious strain, Clade 1b, spread rapidly to neighboring countries, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a global health emergency in August. Efforts to contain the outbreak are ongoing.
